Power release occurs the moment you touch the accelerator, yet virtually no hydrocarbon emissions are produced.

A direct-injection boost

The performance sensation is due in part to a direct-injection fuel intake system which boosts performance and efficiency. Flexibility and response at all engine speeds is further enhanced by dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-iE). The inlet valve timing is electric motor-driven (VVT-i), for more precise tuning.

Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission

This transmission allows the two power sources in the Lexus Hybrid Drive system to work as one. Yet unlike a normal transmission, the Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT) allows seamless acceleration, without the jolting of gear changes you experience with a conventional transmission. The E-CVT even contributes to the impressive fuel economy.

Extensive work by Lexus engineers has resulted in the development of a long life 288V Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) Battery. To optimise weight distribution, it is optimally located in the rear for better weight balance.

When slowing down or braking, the electric motor acts as a generator. It harnesses the kinetic energy that would normally be wasted, and captures it as electrical energy to replenish the battery.
