Lexus expands Plug-in Hybrid offering on popular RX family SUV

Lexus is continuing its commitment to offer customers the Luxury of Choice by expanding the availability of its smooth and efficient Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) technology on the popular RX large SUV range.

The high surge in demand for PHEV especially has prompted Lexus to introduce a second RX Plug-In Hybrid – the RX 450h+ Luxury with all-wheel drive (AWD), priced at $105,3501 excluding on-road costs, available from November.

This takes to four the number of RX and NX Plug-In Hybrid vehicles available across the brand’s range of popular luxury family SUVs.

Lexus Australia Chief Executive John Pappas said electrified powertrains account for 85 per cent of RX and almost 80 per cent of NX deliveries so far in 2025, with the trend set to continue.

“Lexus offers customers the Luxury of Choice, and more are choosing to transition to Hybrid, and similarly more from Hybrid to Plug-In Hybrid as the benefits of battery-electric assisted performance are embraced.

“We have always said that our customers will inform us when they are ready to make the next move on their electrification journey, and that we would respond accordingly, and we are.”

The RX 450h+ Luxury incorporates the same proven 2.5-litre four-cylinder Plug-In Hybrid powertrain unit with intelligent AWD exclusive to all Lexus RX and NX PHEVs, delivering a potent 227 kW of combined power from the petrol engine and two permanent synchronous electric motors.

Paired with an 18.1kWh lithium-ion battery, the RX 450h+ Luxury offers 85km2 of electric-only driving range, perfect for daily commutes around town.

On long-distance trips should the battery’s state of charge drop too low, the Lexus PHEV eliminates the need to recharge as the intelligent powertrain defaults to operating like a regular Hybrid (HEV) with the petrol engine providing most of the power.

The air-cooled AC charging system uses a 6.6kW on-board charger which can charge the battery in as little as two and a half hours when using a 32A charging current, and around seven and a half hours with a 10A current.3

The RX 450h+ Luxury is a compelling proposition for customers wanting the flexibility of a PHEV along with trademark Lexus luxury and comfort.

Standard equipment includes eight-way power adjustable front seats with driver memory, heated and ventilated front seats, reclining rear seats with power fold down switch, three-zone climate control, panoramic sliding roof, head up display (HUD) and keyless entry.

Multimedia functions include 14-inch touchscreen display, wireless phone charger4, wireless Android Auto5 and Apple CarPlay6, 5 x USB-C charging ports and Lexus Connected Services.

Lexus disrupted the Australian luxury market in 2006 when it introduced battery-electric assisted hybrid performance powertrains across a range of vehicles, commencing with the GS 450h hybrid luxury sedan and RX 400h hybrid SUV.

Almost 20 years on and Lexus remains the leader in pioneering battery-electric hybrid technology, with demand for its intelligent HEV and PHEV powertrains at an all-time high.

According to official industry figures7, Lexus has the highest mix of HEV and PHEV powertrains as an overall percentage of deliveries year-to-date in 2025 against luxury brands with a comparable lineup of vehicles with diversified powertrains.
